Are You Expecting Your Team to Sprint in Stilettos?

Imagine this!

You’re the leader of a team – in your company, your classroom, your community, or even within yourself, at home with your family. You’ve got straightforward, ambitious goals! You envision a resilient, adaptable, united team, equipped with mad skills, delivering top-notch performance, and achieving fantastic results. Sounds like an easy dream come true, right?

Now, picture a baby learning to walk. We don’t hand them a pair of stilettos and say, “Go for it!” (At least I hope not!) Instead, we put those risky heels away and create a safe, supportive environment that allows them to learn, wobble, stumble, and yes, occasionally take a little tumble.

When they fall, we don’t lecture them about the laws of gravity. Instead, we cheer them on, celebrating each attempt and encouraging them to try again, and again, and again.

Now, I’m not suggesting you or your team are diaper-wearing youngsters. The point is, to promote clear growth, we need to understand our current position, our ideal position, provide a safe learning space, and lend a hand during stumbles.

If we adopt this nurturing approach for a baby taking its first steps, why do we often forget to apply the same principles when dealing with our colleagues, our community, or even ourselves?

I must confess…

I used to do this in my junior leadership days. We often get so consumed by our image, our success, and our brand. We shout, “ME, ME, ME, ME, ME!” from the rooftops, forgetting that our true focus should be on the value and kindness we bring to ourselves and others.

Having learned from those experiences, I’ve developed a proven-to-work framework that has helped many get started on the right foot. The key is straight-forward: YOU MUST DO THE WORK! Just as you can’t get a six-pack by watching others do sit-ups, you need to put in the effort to see results.

How Has This Helped?

Here’s the scoop on how using the ILV RAAW Framework has helped turn our frowns upside down and become better leaders and team members:

  • From “I can’t do this!” to “Bring it on!”: We’ve kicked self-doubt to the curb and opened up a world of possibilities.
  • From “I’m not cut out for this” to “I’ve got this!”: We’ve ditched the “self-doubt” blues and started exploring all the great things we can do.
  • From “This is scarier than a haunted house!” to “Let’s grow like a Chia Pet!”: We’ve learned to embrace the spooky unknown and turn it into growth opportunities that even a Chia Pet would be proud of.
  • From “I need to control EVERYTHING” to “Let’s play nice together”: We’ve waved goodbye to our inner control freak ways and learned that teamwork makes the dream work!
  • From “Why change? We’ve been stuck here for years!” to “New day, new opportunities!”: We’ve traded our “stuck in the mud” mentality for the exciting belief that today’s challenges might just be tomorrow’s victories.

So, there you have it, folks! By embracing these mindset shifts, we’re becoming purposeful leaders who can tackle challenges like a pro and lead our teams to the top. With the ILV RAAW Framework in our back pocket, we’re ready to rock and roll, thrive, have a blast doing it, and you can too!

On the flip side, a friendly word of caution…

In everything I create, do, and provide to my clients, my family, and my kids, I include “intentional” disruptors, meaning I actually “stir the pot” on purpose! Why? Nothing about our reality today is calm and collected. In fact, uncertainty and turbulence are here, and they’re here to stay. So, if you’re going through the framework thinking, “Okay, her questions annoy me,” or “I don’t know how to answer them,” that’s by design, and the homework is to figure out – how will you overcome this disruptor?

Becoming resilient doesn’t just magically appear; it is a muscle you build, and we know that to build our muscles, we must “DO THE WORK” with consistent practice again and again and again, just like babies learning to walk. Right? Right!

Ok, so where does this journey begin?

The journey starts with reflection. Why? Because reflection turns experiences into life lessons.

Life lessons motivated me to create the ILV RAAW Framework, a guide to building our ‘next-gen’ change leadership muscles aligned with our current reality so we can truly “change the game”.  The framework helps us “check ourselves” focused on 4 fundamental elements to lead us in the right direction:

  • Behaviors
  • Principles
  • Values
  • Objectives

No sprinting in stilettos here! With the ILV RAAW Framework, we have the right gear to lead with purpose, empower teams, and achieve objectives for ideal outcomes.

I would suggest… Use this as an opportunity to evaluate yourself, include others to gain diverse viewpoints, and make sure to involve people you wouldn’t typically associate with. Why? As Albert Einstein wisely said, “No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.” Embracing different perspectives is key to fostering growth. This is totally customizable; make it work for you!
